The Blessing Of The Waters (Hagiasmós)

The Meaning of Holy Water

In the Orthodox Church, ordinary water is sanctified by the prayers of the priest and the sign of the Cross to become a physical carrier of God's invisible grace.

  • Biblical Roots: Water is essential to life and scripture. From the Spirit hovering over the waters in Genesis, to the cleansing flood of Noah, the crossing of the Red Sea, and Christ’s baptism in the Jordan, water consistently signifies creation, renewal, and freedom.

  • Purpose: Because water represents purity, healing, and vitality, it is the natural element to convey God’s grace. It is drunk for spiritual and physical well-being and sprinkled on people, homes, vehicles, and animals to sanctify them and drive away evil.

When is Holy Water Blessed?

There are two main types of water blessing services:

  • The Lesser Sanctification: Can be performed on any day of the year.

  • The Greater Sanctification: Performed only in connection with the Feast of Theophany (Epiphany), celebrating Christ's baptism, on January 5th and 6th.

  • Baptismal Water: Water is also blessed during a baptism service, but this specific water is used exclusively for that sacrament and not for general use.

House Blessings

It is a common tradition to have a priest bless your home with holy water (often around the time of Theophany or when moving into a new house).

  • Arranging a Visit: If you would like a priest to visit your home for a blessing, please contact the church directly.
